South Luangwa

Zambia

Overview

Zambia set the standard for walking safaris, and you’ll find some of its most celebrated here. That’s not to say the camps are all long-drop toilets and tents, though. If you prefer your creature comforts, there are plenty of elegant lodges to choose from, too.

The park’s home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Herds of elephants, hippos, Thornicroft’s giraffe and a high leopard population are just a few of the creatures you can expect to see. We rate Zambian guides as some of the most knowledgeable we’ve met – they have to pass seriously tough exams before they can lead your safari.

Fly from Johannesburg to Lusaka then on to Mfuwe Airport.

When

The best time for game viewing is May to October. Absent rain means animals flock to water holes and the river allowing for great sightings. Many camps close from November to April, however a few stay open and over these months, the birding is excellent.
