Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some of Africa’s last remaining chimpanzees. The best time to see them is from May to October, when large groups congregate in the forests along with populations of Angola colobus and red colobus, as well as red-tailed and blue monkeys.
There’s more to the reserve than primate trekking, though. Try a mountain hike, take a dip in the cool waterfalls or relax on the sandy shores of Lake Tanganyika. (Sundowners on the lake in a wooden dhow are a highlight that really shouldn’t be missed.)
