In the southwest of Tanzania lies a wilderness: an isolated, remote area that attracts few visitors and is home to even fewer camps. Its name is Katavi National Park. It’s rugged, authentic and hard-core. And it’s well worth the effort.
We recommend visiting during dry season (from May to October). That’s when the Katuma River, the only source of drinking water, reduces to a trickle and attracts herds of elephants, buffalos and predators. It also entices large pods of hippos – as many as 200 at a time. We count seeing them as one of the unforgettable highlights of any trip.
