All about Zambia
“Shush” – Zambia is a bit of a secret. Those in the know know that it is one of the best game viewing areas in Africa.
The facts are simple. Zambia delivers good safari bang for your buck and is more affordable than its neighbours. Zambia has also gone to task to sort out their internal infrastructure, so getting around is now a lot smoother. Although we do work carefully with the timetables to make it work neatly and with as little transit time as possible.
ROUGH or SMOOTH
Pioneered by safari legends like Norman Carr and Robin Pope, Zambia is synonymous with a great walking safari. Simple bush camps and fly camps allowing you to explore South Luangwa on foot in the company of superb guides. This is definitely a 'real deal’ safari experience. However if you like your safari with a generous side of luxury then Zambia can deliver on this front too. Camps like Chinzombo come complete with private plunge pools, air conditioning, free standing baths, minibars and mirrors. A far cry from your dusty walking boots, long drop loos and tent pegs. Zambia really does offer the best of both worlds.
SOUTH LUANGWA
South Luangwa is located to the East of Lusaka. Fly into Mfuwe. Choose from camps inside the park or just outside. As a rule the further you get from Mfuwe the more ‘off grid’ and immersed in the bush the camps become. South Luangwa is well known for its seasonal walking camps, but a few more permanent camps tend to be open year round.
LOWER ZAMBEZI
Dominated by the Zambezi River, the Lower Zambezi allows you to explore by boat, canoe, foot and vehicle. There are some classic owner-run camps along the river which have been in existence for many years such as Chiawa, Sausage Tree and Chongwe. We also love Anabezi which is set back slightly from the river.
LIVINGSTONE
Livingstone is the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. The airport offers great connectivity for regional flights which make teaming Livingstone with other parts of Africa very easy to do. There are some fantastic lodges and camps on the Zambezi River including Royal Chundu, Tongabezi, River Club, Toka Leya, Thorntree and Sussi & Chuma. A KasiVisa means that it's possible to ‘pop over’ to Victoria Falls for the day and don’t forget Livingstone is only a couple of hours drive from Chobe. The Royal Livingstone is a great hotel on the banks of the Zambezi River to enjoy before or after your safari.
KAFUE
At a whopping 2.25 million hectares (that’s about the size of Wales!), Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Zambia. Busanga Plains to the north of Kafue is the location of two great camps called Shumba and Busanga Bush Camp. The area is home to fantastic antelopes including Roan, Oribi, Sitatunga and Lichensteins Hartesbeest. The Lions here are also unusual and have learnt to climb fig trees and use the raised decks of the camps to keep cool. It’s a great place to see them hunt from start to finish. Here you can enjoy hot air balloon rides, boating and game drives.
LIUWA PLAINS
Home to the 2nd largest wildebeest migration in Africa, Liuwa Plains can easily be described as a ‘final safari frontier'. Escape tourist herds by staying at the new King Lewanika Camp, where in 366 000 hectares there is 1 permanent camp for 10 guests. This is a destination of 10 hour game drives, 360 degree views of golden grass plains, 330 bird species, and large clans of hyena. Here you can experience the best of East Africa and Southern Africa safaris in one park.
SECOND, THIRD AND REPEAT SAFARI GOERS
Birders flock to Zambia for its prolific birdlife and with large concentrations of wildlife Zambia ticks all the boxes for a repeat safari. We find the guides exceptional and some of the most highly qualified in Africa. It is a safe bet that even the most hardened and experienced safari expert will find something new and exciting in Zambia.
AND CHILL
And what is a holiday without a few days rest and relaxation? It is easy to combine Zambia with any Indian Ocean Beach. It is even easier to combine Zambia with a chill-out lakeside retreat in Malawi. Places like Kaya Mawa are simple but cool and if you enjoy your beach time ‘barefoot’ and relaxed, then it is hard to beat.
