Views that take our breath away

Our Top 5 Views

On first seeing Victoria Falls, David Livingstone was famously quoted as saying “No one can imagine the beauty of the view from anything witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight".

In the spirit of Top Fives, here are our Top 5 views in Africa. This list could have easily doubled.

We are constantly left breathless every time one of us is privileged enough to visit Ngorongoro Crater. The road climbs up through the thickly vegetated forest, before eventually coming to the top of the Crater. The largest intact caldera in the world, this is the stuff that excited our passion for travel as kids. We believe that andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge has iconic views from their suites.

Float above the Masai Mara in a hot air balloon for the best views of the Masai Mara. If the migration is in full swing even better. Read our recent blog about Getting Over it.

Staying at Virunga Lodge in Rwanda affords you the opportunity to admire the 360 degree views from the lodge. You are surrounded by lakes and volcanoes and really feel like you are in the clouds.

On a clear summers day in the Cape Winelands, the views from Delaire Graff simply cannot be beaten. Overlooking Helsgoote Pass the view down the valley is spectacular. We can arrange for Knighton Reeve guests at the hotel to be taken up to a special private vantage point called 'Leopards Leap' for canopies and wine tasting.

Just like Livingstone we also think the views of Victoria Falls are spectacular. Whether the water is in full flood (April – May) or if the water is low (October – November) the Falls always have something amazing to see. Sadly for David Livingstone when he saw Victoria Falls he probably didn't have the opportunity to stay upstream in places like Tongabezi and Royal Chundu. Upstream, you might miss seeing the spray of the falls, but the enormity of the Zambezi and the views of the river are really something to behold. For viewing the spray, the views from the sundowner deck at Royal Livingstone Hotel are hard to beat.
