Khaki Fever
Ladies. Let’s not beat about the bush - we love a man in uniform. Ever since the British Army marched through the streets after their victory in World War I, a bit of Khaki has got the female heart racing. In Africa, if that Khaki is showing us 'the bush', the symptoms have been known to be worse.
You can protect yourself against malaria, sunstroke and dehydration. Today we address the symptoms of Khaki Fever and how it affects so many visitors to Africa.
- Sleeplessness
With Khaki Fever you can exist on a lot less sleep. You are up early for your safari. In fact you're up first, you are fighting for the front seat (the coveted spot next to the ranger). You stay awake late chatting to your ranger, if he plays the guitar and sings (however badly) and has a laser pointer for stars, even better.
- Acute Hearing
You hang on every word the ranger says. Giraffe hunting in packs, leopards throwing their kills into trees, if they tell you it, you will probably believe it. For the most part, we are happy to say that we work with lodges and camps where the rangers are the best in the business and are not going to give you duff information! But don’t say we didn’t warn you.
- Mimicry
Before you know it you're mimicking your ranger. It starts with the simple purchase of a khaki baseball cap. By day two you are kitted head to toe in the fleece, the belt and the two tone shirt, complete with lodge logo. By day three you’ve updated your Facebook profile to one of you sitting on the tracker seat, by day four you are being mistaken for a member of staff.
Our top tips for managing Khaki Fever
We don’t believe Khaki Fever is ever really cured. Reinfection is commonplace and learning to manage your symptoms is usually the best treatment.
Book another safari, embrace the fever. If the fever has a been acute, your guide will have probably spent time describing his last safari and where next you should go. If you are stuck for ideas, contact us and let us give you a few pointers.
And gents, in case you think this is solely a female affliction, be warned! There's a whole host of incredible female rangers out there, we believe the fever hits men just as hard!
