In a capital city known for its large, international chain hotels, The Retreat stands out as a gem of a boutique property. It’s owner-managed by an inspirational American couple who are genuinely committed to giving back to the community. You get a sense of their philanthropic approach from the décor, with its wooden floors and locally sourced furniture, art and fabrics.
The Retreat is petite. There are just 22 eco-friendly rooms (complete with indoor and outdoor showers and private patios). But for a hotel of its size, it packs in a lot of luxury facilities. There’s a saltwater pool, a spa and guests can use the small gym at the neighbouring sister hotel, Heaven.
There’s also a fabulous restaurant: the aptly named Fusion. Here, the chefs select culinary traditions from Italy, Mauritius, Morocco and beyond and blend them into one delicious offer. The setting is stunning, too – perched between the saltwater pool and pretty rock gardens.
